7 Shortcuts of Scrapbooking Ideas From Library

I always has problem on sourcing books or information from library. I find it is very tedious to look for books you want in huge collections in library. Sometime even the librarian also cannot help you much, but only can guide you which book shelf to look for your book. Finally I learn how to do it while I'm so into scrapbooking ideas. Here I share my seven shortcuts of sourcing scrapbooking ideas in the library.

Library Book Shelving

Shortcut #1 Research from Amazon database.

Library Book Shelving

This is I always do in searching scrapbooking reference I want from Amazon. Once the book is found in Amazon, I search the same book through in the library online database. If the book is found, I will note down the library code number plus all the ISDN, and go down to the library to borrow the book, before I decide to buy the book. This method is most effective and save your time from blind hunting for suitable book in library for hours.

Shortcut #2 Library OPAC system.

Most of library today facilitate with an online book search database. First go to the OPAC system type scrapbooking to search for book you want, write down the call number and go to the book shell to find your book. If you cannot find the book due to it's on loan, you still can find some other books related to same topics.

Shortcut #3 Children craft section in the library.

In library the most resourceful section is the children section. This is because children need a lot of information in their learning. Library normally will organize whole world wide information into the children section. It's like a mini world encyclopedia.

Shortcut #4 Check out what's new in the new arrival section.

This is the most easier way, the find new books. Sometime happened that these new arrival book include new scrapbooking reference. So make sure you check the new arrival corner when you first step into the library.

Shortcut #5 General, media video or recreation and leisure section.

In some library, scrapbooking is categories under different grouping or section. I was surprised to find one or two good scrapbooking reference book at general section. Occasionally, I found VCD of scrapbooking at media video section. You can try your luck to search at media video section or general section, you may get good source from there. Some good book on scrapbooking also available at recreation and leisure section, because scrapbooking is also a hobby.

Shortcut #6 Reference section.

A lot of good book that are out of print are available at the reference book section. In this section most of the book are not available for loan, but you can soap your time there for two to three hours to read it. If some of the scrapbooking idea you read is good to keep for personal scrapbooking, you can seek librarian for photocopying the book chapter. Note that some librarian provide self service photocopying for this purpose. You are only allow to make one copy and cannot copy more than twenty percent of the whole book.

Shortcut #7 Seek help from librarian or other library visitors.

If you go to bigger library branch, there will be a lots of librarian available for help. Just need to be sure necessary information are handy with you. Information such as book title, author name, call number, ISDN number. The important is the book title and author name, others are secondary to know for librarian to help you. Sometime the library you visit is small, and less helpers available, you can try asking the person next to you who is searching book nearby. You may able to get good lead too. This is the last option I always do if the library is small and less helpers around.

This tips also useful when you search for other books! Hope your reading all the tips!

Prune and Organize Your Home Library

There may be no such thing as too many books, but do you find that:
• Your books and bookshelves are taking up too much of your space?
• You have stacks of books in corners, on tables or in boxes because you have run out of shelf space?
• You can't find particular books when you are looking for them?
• You have duplicates of books because you don't remember that you have them and you buy another copy?

Library Book Shelving

The following tips are meant to help you gently prune your personal library to restore order and to free up some space for new acquisitions.

Library Book Shelving

Start by thinking about why you have the books that are in your collection. Which of these books matter to you right now in your life? Think about how you spend your time and how likely you are to read or utilize the books you have. If you aren't reading or using them now, how likely is it that you will do so in the future? This thought process will guide you to some of the easiest books to donate or sell while keeping those that still have meaning.

Next, think about the books you definitely want to keep and how you'd like to display or store them. This involves thinking about how much shelf space you have and the relative size of the book collections you want to keep. You want the library you create to work for you, so think about where you read/enjoy the books you have and try to design your space to accommodate that.

Group books by categories... for example, you may have a group of books "to be read" that you haven't gotten around to yet. You may have favorites that you read and refer to often. You may group them by type, such as biographies, travel books, fiction. The goal is to group the books in a way that makes sense to you so you can re-shelve them where you are most likely to use them.

After you have decided what your categories are, it's time to do the real work of sorting and placement. Ideally, this would be done at one time, but depending on the size of your collection, it may be completely out of the question. The following steps are for someone who can reasonably do the sorting and restocking in one or two sessions.

Take everything off of the shelves for sorting. Remove personal belongings (non-books) until the book sorting project is finished. Sort all of your books into bankers' boxes according to the categories you determined. (Use post it notes on bankers boxes for categories.)

Remember, during this phase you should also make boxes for books that you want to give away, sell or donate. Weed out anything that you no longer find useful and you don't intend to read. This may include old encyclopedias, college textbooks, computer-related books that are no longer current, gifts from friends/family that you don't intend to read or books on subjects you are no longer interested in. Complete the sorting phase as quickly as possible. Try not to get distracted by individual books, just put them in the correct box (category) and move on through.

When every book is sorted, re-evaluate your new library plan. If you planned to put all biographies on one shelf but you now have 4 boxes of them, you will need to rethink the space planning and adjust accordingly.

At this time, go through the books within the categories to determine if you can part with any. Ask yourself:
• If I've already read this, will I ever read it again?
• If I haven't read it, will I ever read it?
• How easy would it be to get another copy in a bookstore or on a used book site if I decide I want to read it?
• If the book is related to a particular subject or profession, is the information still relevant and useful? If not, do I need to keep the book?

Now it's time to put the books back on the shelves. Think about the shelves you have and where they are located. Now is the time to move them around if they are not in the right place. Take into account the size of your collections by category so you can gauge what bookshelves you need for them. Add shelves or change the height of shelves if necessary.

Put your favorite books and those you refer to often in the most accessible shelves. Within the categories, arrange the books in the way that makes the most sense to you...by title, by author or any other way that you will be able to easily find what you are looking for. Make sure you have put the shelves in the right place and that the collections will fit the space you've decided upon for each. Make sure the books you use most frequently are easily accessible and at eye level. Be sure the "To Be Read" shelf is in a prominent location so you can easily find new books when you are ready to read them. Also, leave space within each section for new acquisitions.

Immediately after re-shelving the books you are keeping, dispose of the ones you aren't keeping by trashing them, donating them to the library or a charity, selling them on Amazon or another site or giving them to friends or family members.

After you've "lived" with your new library for a few weeks, make adjustments as needed.

Finally, keep control over your book collection. Always keep a donation box handy to pass along books you no longer want or need. As your interests change, consider donating or selling books that no longer have meaning for you. When you buy new books, consider giving away one of the books you have so your collection will be somewhat contained.

How to Create Your Own Library

Some people associate libraries with mansions and rich, upper class citizens who have stellar private collections featuring antiques and first editions. Yet, most bibliophiles have probably once in their life dreamt of having their very own library. In actuality, creating your own private library isn't such a difficult feat at all. Any room with some extra space can be converted into a library. An office, for instance, or even that extra room you have in your basement can become the perfect in-house library. A library can really add a sense of sophistication and an air of knowledge to your house. It certainly gives guests something to talk about.

Library Book Shelving

So, before you start gathering all your books from every nook and cranny of your house, the first thing you probably want to consider when it comes to setting up your very own library is space. Where are you going to house all those precious books of yours? The second thing you will want to take into consideration is shelving. The right bookcase makes all the difference. Finally, you should also consider the extras that really make a library great, this include, color, decoration and all important, lighting.

Library Book Shelving

Picking the right room for a library is really a matter of having space. You can even use part of a room as your library, but do keep in mind that a whole, entire room for books makes a much bigger effect. Make sure that you have enough room to fit shelves and some chairs to lounge in as you read your books. Remember, that your book collection is likely to expand as well, so be sure to have some extra space reserved.

When it comes to shelves, think about what works best with the quantity of books you have and the style of your room. A few bookcases lined up side by side or separated by some furniture, may work nicely if your library isn't as extensive as others. However, if you have many books, built in wooden shelves give your library a classic old world feeling that modern materials can't compete with. You can also opt for shelves that hang from the ceiling or wooden racks lined against the wall.

The Swedish furniture giant Ikea has some great modern designs for reasonable prices. Their bookcases can easily be put together and taken apart for moving. Consider modular bookcases which can easily be built upon when you get more books to add to your collection.

When it comes to color, think about the mood you want to create. Dark woods and finishes coupled with a Victorian color scheme will give your library that antique, European feeling. If you use woodwork in dark grains, it's really quite easy to pull this look off. Or if you are looking for a more progressive, modern feel, try lighter colors. White, plastic shelves or bookcases work well to achieve this look, while giving your room and airy ambiance.

Finally, don't forget to add the finishing touches with carefully selected chairs, rugs and lights. Be sure to make your room comfortable. Place lights on coffee tables and add pillows for added comfort.
