Many people, namely avid readers and those with a thirst for knowledge, have loads and loads of books lying all around that need to be organized. Novels, old periodicals and magazines, sets of encyclopedias, thesauruses, dictionaries, books you read for school, books you bought because of school, trilogies, series', classics, pass-me-downs, etc. There's something to be said for having a vast collection, and also for not wanting to get rid of them. After all, your collection may have sentimental value, may provide comfort, or may simply be needed for your job, school, or future. Instead of cluttering your bedroom, floors, or other living spaces consider having a private library built when your new home is constructed.
While having a library may seem outdated or obsolete, there is actually a lot of merit to having one, especially one that is custom built. For one, you will have a cohesive manner to catalogue your collection and maintain access to all that you own, and for another, a library can provide a comfortable and homely area for you to relax, decompress, and of course, read.
Library Book Shelving
Your new library will be somewhere that will need a great deal of space. The area that is constructed specifically for your library will have tall ceilings and a great deal of shelves. The room will also need to have specialty lighting installed so that you are able to read and enjoy your new library. A well ventilated room will help in preventing mold or bad odors from developing in your library.
Try to fill your library with as few things as possible. Shelves are a necessity, but other than that, stick to the basics. A comfortable chair, a desk, a globe, and perhaps a computer will be more than sufficient. Also, make every effort not to bring food or drink into your library. Spills do happen, and they can damage your books. Also, crumbs that you leave behind can attract bugs, which are bound to damage the pages in your books.
Install tall shelving, preferably built into your walls so as to create an uncluttered and organized atmosphere. Paint your walls and shelves a neutral and comforting color, preferably cream, yellow, or a deep burgundy. Be prepared to invest in your furnishings as well as books. Second-hand stores are a good place for finding appropriate furniture, as well as very cheap books you can add to your collection. Also, you may consider having light fixtures installed into your wall, such as flood lights or spot lights for each shelf.
Finally, organize your books in a coherent manner. Designate specific shelves by genre, and then categorize your books by author or title within those genres, preferably in alphabetical order. Don't be afraid to get creative, and feel free to reorganize often.
