Getting Self-Published Books in Libraries

Many authors have misconceptions about libraries. I have spoken to several authors who are resistant to have their books in libraries and will not donate copies. The resistance comes from a fear that people will check out their books for free and thereby hurt their book sales. Other authors do not bother with libraries because they believe self-published books are not accepted by libraries and they don't want to argue with stereotypically snooty librarians.

Library Book Shelving

Not acting based upon these misconceptions actually results in a loss of book sales for authors. Having a book in the library's collection is one of the best things an author can do. Numerous advantages result from being in the library, but before authors can take advantage of those benefits, they need to get libraries to put their books on the shelves.

Library Book Shelving

Working with Public Libraries

So how do you get your book in the library? The easiest way is to donate a book to your local public library. I have yet to meet a public library that would not add a donated book to its collection, provided the donation was done through the proper channels. Granted, there may be some exceptions because libraries, big as they often are, do have limited shelf space, so they need to make sure the books they carry will be read by their patrons. That said, if you can get your book on the shelf, you will have made a big step toward marketing your book to potential customers.

The key to donating your book is finding the right librarian to accept it. Do not just go to the circulation desk and say, "Here's a book for the collection." The person at the circulation desk is usually not the person who makes decisions about what books go on the shelves. He or she might just add the book to the stack of donated books, many of which end up in the library's book sales to raise money for the library. Instead, call the library and ask to speak to the librarian in charge of collections. That person is the one in charge of buying books and deciding what books get to be on the shelves. Be prepared to give the person information about your book and offer to stop by or email the person with the book cover image. If you are polite and professional, this librarian may be your foot into the library door. Ask other local authors who the appropriate librarian is and what their dealings have been with that librarian so you are prepared for the reception you might get.

Without being pushy, ask for a little publicity once the librarian agrees to accept your book. If the library is in a smaller town, it may have good connections with the local media. I know one library that even takes photos of authors who donate books and sends them to the local newspaper for publication; this gives you expanded publicity and lets people know the book is at the library. At the very least, libraries will often publish in their newsletters, on their websites, in the local newspaper, or on a local access television channel, books recently added to their collections. Remember, everyone can't read the same copy of your book at the same time. If a waiting list for your book starts, the library will want to buy more books. (Don't hesitate to ask all your friends to go to the library and request your book so that waiting list does grow). And the longer that waiting list is, the more likely people won't wait but just go out to buy your book.

Once your book is in the library, it will be catalogued, and once catalogued, it may end up being listed on WorldCat.org. WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services. Libraries belonging to WorldCat provide access to their resources at which allows people around the world to find your book online. These books are also available for interlibrary loan, so if your library is in New Hampshire, someone in Texas might request the book and be able to read it.

So beginning with your own local public library, you can make your book accessible nationwide and even worldwide. But getting your book in the library is not the end result. Now that it is in the library, let people know it's there. This is your chance to do a little guerilla marketing. I know one author who, whenever he goes to the library, looks up his book on the library's computer, then leaves the screen up with his book on it so the next user will see it. He also will look for his book on the shelf, and if it's not checked out, he will pull it out an inch or two on the shelf so it stands out, or even face it outward so people will see it.

At book signings or book fairs, if people ask whether your book is in the library, go ahead and tell them it is. I know many authors who have had people buy their books after reading them in the library just because they loved a book so much they wanted to own it, or they wanted to give copies as gifts.

Also, now that you have your foot in the door at the library, you can continue to network. Eventually, all the librarians may get to know you. When you go to check out books at the circulation desk, they will be pleased to meet you and they might say, "Oh, so you're the author. We have a lot of people check out your book." It's a good way to find out how popular your book is and to make the librarians remember you.

Be sure to get involved with the library. Libraries today are turning into community centers. They are always doing special programming for their patrons. Offer to give a talk. Help with a conference. Donate your time helping with a book sale. Whatever you can do to get to know the library staff will benefit you. I know many authors whom the library continually calls to do events, give advice, or help them with programming. By assisting with library events, authors become known in the community. Being a volunteer also might make the library willing to repay you by hosting a book release party for your second book. Even if you hold events in other venues, the library will often be willing to put up posters for the event-think how many hundreds or thousands of people visit the library each day who may see those posters.

Beyond your local library, branch out to other libraries in your state. First you might visit libraries in neighboring towns, then work your radius out to the next county. You can drop names of your local librarians with librarians in other towns. Most librarians know each other within their own county or state, so if you have library references, other libraries will be more likely to want to host you for a book signing or talk-and buy your book for their own collections.

Special Interest Libraries

Beyond the public library, many other types of libraries exist whose shelves would be a good home for an author's book.

Most states have their own state libraries. For example, I know one author who sent copies of his book to the Library of Michigan. The result was, without his asking, he ended up being listed on a brochure the Library of Michigan distributed to libraries statewide featuring Upper Michigan authors.

Your town might have a library for the visually impaired that would be interested in your books-even if you don't have an actual audio book, many of the new readers, such as Kindle, will read books out loud to people, so let such libraries know your book is available in electronic or audio form.

University libraries might be more particular than local libraries when it comes to taking self-published books, but if you went through that university's English degree program, or you worked as an assistant at the library when you were in college, or you worked at the local newspaper-whatever you did as a student-see if you have connections that can help you. Wherever you were an alumni, use it to your advantage to get your book in the university library, and also to do events on campus.

If your book is age appropriate, talk to librarians at the local school libraries, either elementary, middle, or high school. Many schools love to have author visits, and depending on your book's topic, they might have you come in to talk to the students about being an author or about your book's subject.

Is there a local history museum near you? Then donate a copy of your book to its research library-generations from now, people may be interested in the local author who lived in the town, and if you've written a local history book, all the better. I know one author whose local history book is regularly used by the research librarians as a resource they show to their patrons, and many of those patrons then go out and buy the book since they can only use it otherwise in the research library.

Many organizations and centers have libraries-from the local senior center to churches. They are all opportunities to get your book included in their collections as well. Think of places you are involved with and ask other people you know about organizations with library collections and who to talk to in those organizations.

Libraries are Your Best Friends

In short, having your book in a library is one of the best things you can do to promote it and to sell books. Be friends with your local librarians and you will get local community recognition that in time can become national and then worldwide. And remember, every library is different and has different policies and different staff. Just because one library says "No" to you doesn't mean another library will. Keep at it and you'll find your book on more library shelves than you anticipated when you began.

The 3 Most Valuable 1960s Children's Books - Are They in Your Library?

The 1960s was the era that was dominated by the Presidency of John F. Kennedy; it was also the considered as the calm before the storm decade. And when you focus your attention on children's literature or to children's writing particularly, the era can be considered as a benign enterprise that revels between being full of experience and being innocent.

Library Book Shelving

Comparing it to the era of today when Harry Potter dominated the scene, we can say that children's books are already dominating the scene during the 1960s. I have listed below the 3 of the most valuable children's books during the era of the hippies. Read on and see if they are part of your present-day library.

Library Book Shelving

1. The first one is the most worthy picture book is "Where The Wild Things Are." This tops the list of any children's book from 1960s collections. The appeal of the book does not only cater to the collectors of kids' books, even more so because it is hard to possess. The Caldecott Medal-winning book is really highly sought after.

2. The second most sought-after children's book from the '60s is "The Giving Tree." This was the timeless story written by Shel Silverstein. It was printed since it was published in 1964, and at the present still making brisk sales in new book stores around. Accordingly, it is the 5th most valuable book that was ever printed from the 1960 era, and presently, a hard to find one in the 1st edition condition.

3. Third, "Inch by Inch" by Leo Leonni. This book that has been wonderfully crafted by Leonni still has the illustrations that possess a contemporary feeling until today, even after 40 years since it first publication.

One thing worth mentioning here is that many of the children's book during this time received picturebook awards, and the illustrators have won theirs too. Many of the characters used in these books became instant hit and success that they were published with sequels and with line extensions that were made and produced into other products, like toys, costumes, and others.

Constructing a Private Library

Many people, namely avid readers and those with a thirst for knowledge, have loads and loads of books lying all around that need to be organized. Novels, old periodicals and magazines, sets of encyclopedias, thesauruses, dictionaries, books you read for school, books you bought because of school, trilogies, series', classics, pass-me-downs, etc. There's something to be said for having a vast collection, and also for not wanting to get rid of them. After all, your collection may have sentimental value, may provide comfort, or may simply be needed for your job, school, or future. Instead of cluttering your bedroom, floors, or other living spaces consider having a private library built when your new home is constructed.

Library Book Shelving

While having a library may seem outdated or obsolete, there is actually a lot of merit to having one, especially one that is custom built. For one, you will have a cohesive manner to catalogue your collection and maintain access to all that you own, and for another, a library can provide a comfortable and homely area for you to relax, decompress, and of course, read.

Library Book Shelving

Your new library will be somewhere that will need a great deal of space. The area that is constructed specifically for your library will have tall ceilings and a great deal of shelves. The room will also need to have specialty lighting installed so that you are able to read and enjoy your new library. A well ventilated room will help in preventing mold or bad odors from developing in your library.

Try to fill your library with as few things as possible. Shelves are a necessity, but other than that, stick to the basics. A comfortable chair, a desk, a globe, and perhaps a computer will be more than sufficient. Also, make every effort not to bring food or drink into your library. Spills do happen, and they can damage your books. Also, crumbs that you leave behind can attract bugs, which are bound to damage the pages in your books.

Install tall shelving, preferably built into your walls so as to create an uncluttered and organized atmosphere. Paint your walls and shelves a neutral and comforting color, preferably cream, yellow, or a deep burgundy. Be prepared to invest in your furnishings as well as books. Second-hand stores are a good place for finding appropriate furniture, as well as very cheap books you can add to your collection. Also, you may consider having light fixtures installed into your wall, such as flood lights or spot lights for each shelf.

Finally, organize your books in a coherent manner. Designate specific shelves by genre, and then categorize your books by author or title within those genres, preferably in alphabetical order. Don't be afraid to get creative, and feel free to reorganize often.

Library of Congress Control Number - What is it and Does Your Book Need It?

Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN), as the name implies, is assigned by the US Library of Congress. It is actually a reference number to locate the bibliographic data, or catalog record, for a specific work in the Library of Congress (LoC). It is not, as some publishing newcomers tend to believe, a call number for finding a specific edition or format of a particular title. Therefore, you only need one LCCN to cover a hardback and paperback for the same title or to cover new editions of the same title.

Library Book Shelving

The LCCN's purpose is to help the LoC maintain its catalog records and to help other librarians acquire LoC cataloging data as an aid to creating their own catalog entries for new acquisitions.

Library Book Shelving

The LCCN is included on the book's copyright page, and all recently assigned LCCNs should be printed without hyphens (the initial four digits for books entered into the LoC catalog since 2000 represent the year the LCCN was assigned).

You can acquire an LCCN only from the LoC through one of these two programs:

Cataloging-in-Publication (CIP) program: provides a complete bibliographic record created by the LoC for books not yet published, which is then printed on the book's copyright page (CIP data includes the LCCN). Preassigned Control Number (PCN) program: provides a LoC-assigned LCCN if the publisher requests it and is approved for it, but it will not include any bibliographic data.

So, which program should you use? You probably won't have much choice if you are self-published or run a very small publishing company that primarily publishes your own books.

According to the LoC itself on its CIP Program page:

"Only U. S. publishers who publish titles that are most likely to be widely acquired by U.S. libraries are eligible to participate in the CIP program. Book vendors, distributors, printers, production houses and other intermediaries are ineligible. Publishers who have published the works of fewer than three different authors are ineligible. Self-publishers (i.e. authors and editors who pay for or subsidize publication of their own works; who often do not publish the works of more than three different authors; and whose works are rarely widely acquired by the nation's libraries) are ineligible."

According to the LoC's PCN Program page:

"Only U.S. book publishers are eligible to participate in the PCN program. These publishers must list a U.S. place of publication on the title page or copyright page of their books and maintain an editorial office in the U.S. capable of answering substantive bibliographic questions."

Getting that LCCN through the PCN program is a two-step process: first apply for a PCN account (might take up to two weeks) and then apply for a PCN (LCCN) for your book (they say this might take 1-2 weeks but we usually get ours within a day or so).

Once you have an LCCN through the PCN program, you can always pay somebody to create the CIP data. This data cannot be labeled "Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication" on the book's title page but, instead, must be clearly labeled "Publisher Cataloging-in-Publication" (PCIP).

Is PCIP worth paying for? Although there are differences of opinion on whether its presence will lead to more library sales, a CIP block is an inexpensive addition that may help sell books to libraries and may make your self- or micro-publishing business appear more established, professional, and knowledgeable. Probably the biggest advantage to having PCIP data for your book is that it may get your book cataloged faster and out on the shelves of libraries faster than books for which the librarians have to create the cataloging data.

Whether you choose to buy PCIP data or not, be sure to get your LCCN from the Library of Congress and include it on your copyright page.

It is, after all, free.

An Antique Bookshelf For a Home Library

A home library can accumulate from years of purchasing books for different reasons or from a purposeful collection of classics, novels, favorite works from particular authors, or a love for antique books. Whatever the reason, having a healthy number of books is a reason to invest in a quality bookshelf. An antique bookshelf can make a nice addition to your home decor, while helping you keep your collection organized and well kept.

Library Book Shelving

Antique bookshelves come in a variety of styles, sizes and colors. Each one has its own unique characteristics and special charm. They are beautiful pieces of handiwork in and of themselves, and adding your books can make them complete.

Library Book Shelving

If you are a book collector, or simply an avid reader, consider the number of books that you have, and what size bookshelf you need. If you take pride in your collection of books, one or two quality antique bookshelves are worth the investment.

Typically antique bookshelves are made from special woods like mahogany, oak, or walnut. Sometimes these bookshelves have revolving parts or adjustable shelves. A tall bookcase that has many shelves is ideal for an individual who is always adding to their collection. Another option is to have more than one antique bookshelf.

Antique bookshelves can be built into a wall or they can stand alone. Depending on the space available, one large bookcase might serve the purpose, or a few smaller ones throughout your space may work better. Do you want to have your shelves in one room, or in different rooms in your home?

Before you install an antique bookshelf in your home, choose its location carefully. Make sure that there will not be any obstructions, like opening doors that can destabilize the books. You should have a clear open space so that you don't have to move other furniture to reach books on lower shelves. Make sure that you take measurements of the height of the room. It would be terrible if the bookshelf was too high for the ceiling. The width is also important, since the bookshelf should not be wider than the wall it will be against.

Once your antique bookshelf is in place you can organize your books upon the shelves. You can sort them by size, subject, or alphabetically. Remember to dust the shelves regularly so the look and feel of the shelve remains fresh. Enjoy your books, and enjoy your shelf.

Business Management Books - Recommended for Your Personal Library

For those of us who have chosen careers in business, it makes sense to have all the business reference books you need close at hand. Thus, when giving speeches a colleges to MBA students, I often recommend that they start building their business library now. Indeed, my business library is somewhere between 3500 and 4000 books and lately, I have been going through it and giving away the books I no longer need since I am now retired.

Library Book Shelving

However, I am not pitching all the books quite yet, because they say that the entrepreneurial itch runs deep and if it chooses to show itself again, then I want to be ready. So, with this truth told, let me recommend a few of the books that are staying on my personal business shelves that have to do with business management. If you do not have these books, I recommend considering them for your self:

Library Book Shelving

"The One Minute Manager Gets Fit" by Kenneth Blanchard, PhD. - 1986

"Market Driven Management - Prescriptions for Survival in a Turbulent World" - B. Charles Ames and James D. Hlavacek - 1989.

Market Driven Management is the key to winning in the new paradigm of the fast paced market, with fierce competition, global markets and "exploding technologies and higher R and D costs" states the author.

"Getting IT to the Bottom Line - Management by Incremental Gains" by Richard S. Sloma - 1987.

This book explains how business managers can grow their businesses and manage by goal setting, careful evaluation and repeating that process. It is not some sort of get rich quick way to go about your business and the author makes it clear that it takes discipline, but assures the reader that this way works.

He talks a lot about business 'profit' planning, after all people are in business to make money. In the second half of the book he spends his time on the important task of measuring financial performance, and how to use this knowledge to project, set new goals and continue refining the process of making money, the bottom line.

I wish you all the best in starting and contributing the best books in business to your business library and wish you continued success in your business career whether you are a manager, corporate executive or a fearless small business entrepreneur.
